14 Jun Dan Dalenberg | Change of plans
I recently competed at the Arnold Classic where I went 940, 700, 730 for 2370 at 242 multi-ply. I will be in a long off season leading up to a fall full meet.
Sunday’s deadlift session did not go quite as planned.
I was supposed to work up through an opener, which I felt good about all the way up until right after pulling my 625 last warm up.
It was super hot in the garage, been in the lows 90s and humid. At first, I didn’t think it would matter a lot and would just be uncomfortable. I was wrong on that, right after that lift I felt pretty dead and then went on to miss 700. My right glute cramped up pretty hard and I think is putting some pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing some pain.
Thankfully, I had an appointment with my chiro for a different issue the next day anyways. After getting adjusted a lot of the pain subsided but still pretty stiff 3 days later.
The other issue was my left side, upper body. Elbow was out, pec was strained and trap was in need of some work. In summary, my body was banged up. Nothing too serious but banged up enough that I decided I won’t be doing that deadlift meet next month. Not worth the risk.
For now, I’ll be backing off a little and taking an extended deload. I won’t do much at all for the next few days and then will just go by feel. If it hurts, I’ll stop. I’d rather get this collection of smaller issues resolved and focus on a fall meet than mess myself up worse.
