04 May Jason Kowalewski – Lifting at the Women’s ProAm Pre-Contest Week 5
I’m currently in pre-contest training to compete at the RPS Central Florida PHG Throwdown May 26th in Orlando, FL. I’ll be looking to improve on my performance at the RPS Chalk & Iron September 28th where I tied my best total of 1653.4 lbs (squat – 633.8 lbs, bench 435.4 x lbs. deadlift – 584.2 lbs) at a bodyweight of 241.6 lbs vs. 268 lbs.
Well.. I drew the shortest straw (joking!) and traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio to provide some killer knee wraps for fellow teammate Lisa Guggisberg competing at the Women’s Pro Am. We departed mid morning Friday landing in the late afternoon. After grabbing the rental car we made our way to the nearest Wal-Mart for all the re-feed essentials and of course some Reese’s as I was doing a sympathy re-feed with her. Sounded like a great idea at the time! Brian was aware this weekend called for a few singles at 90% then some heavier reverse band work so he made arrangements with Laura Phelps Sweatt for me to train at the Sweatt Shop. Huge thank you to Brian for making this happen! Upon arrival several members of her team working to relocate the competition benches and monolifts from the gym to the meet venue. After a brief warmup I grabbed a power rack and worked up to 245. At this time I noticed the crew hadn’t touched one of the mono’s leading me to inquire about possibly getting a quick session in as I wasn’t looking forward to attempting ~600lb walk outs. One of the guys actually suggested lifting at the meet venue as they already had a mono, bars and weights in the warmup room. The perfect call, thank you!

I would like to give another thank you to Laura Phelps Sweatt for her opening her gym while setting up one of the best meet venues I’ve seen, this was appreciated more than you know. I’d also like to give another thank you to all the team members that briefly stopped setting up the venue to spot, provided cues, etc. while I was taking my tops sets. You all helped create a training environment similar to Team Samson, thank you again.
Bench – Wednesday April 25, 2018
We arrived back in Jacksonville late Monday evening therefore the usual Monday bench session wasn’t going to happen. A few team members that don’t typically train Wednesday were able to make it out ensuring we had enough coverage. After my pre-hab work I downed a purple Monster and started with an empty bar..
