I pull sumo do to lower back issues but by the time squat day gets here my hips are beat to hell and I’m miserable. How do I balance between the 2 lifts so I can still make progress? In the offseason do you still recommend staying in the briefs to not beat the hips up? As I’m waiting on my briefs to come in
My first piece of advice would be to try going to a Squat/DL combo day if you are currently doing squats and deadlifts on separate days. This will give you a full week to rest your hips in between squatting and deadlifting. As far as briefs in the off-season, I would say if you need them you should wear them. If you want something lighter than full blown briefs, Inzer sells single and double ply power pants that will offer support, just not as much as briefs.
I agree with Dain’s response and have another point to add. Not only would I squat and pull on the same day, combo style, but I would also alternate between pulling off blocks and off the floor. Maybe if you pull off blocks you could pull conventional too and take some stress off your hips.
As for briefs, the power pants are a great light weight option to give you some support without being too extreme.
“do I still recommend”… EASY there ANON – I never said this. For some, I do but for others, no. It really depends. Just know that if you pull cheater style, you’ll work your hips a bit more. It’s just part of the process, but combo day can mitigate this.
