Zane Geeting, The last couple training sessions, with squat and deadlift video

I’m currently in an off-season training cycle, ramping things up after a very hectic summer. If all goes well, I’ll be picking a meet in the early spring, time will tell.

The last couple weeks have been hectic, so training was hit and miss. I was able to get all three lifts into 2 sessions in the 2 weeks, obviously not prime, but what time allowed for. We have a mini horse that’s having a serious hip issue, so we’ve been spending time trying to rehab him in an effort to not have to put him down. The extra time came at the expense of my training. Below is some video of my top set of squat from my last session there, and my top set of DL from the subsequent session. Check it out.

470×5

and 565×5

As you can probably see, the deadlifts were a little rough at the end of a long day. Bad starting position and not nearly tight enough, something to improve going forward.

Here’s the rest of those sessions…

12/16/16, Squat and bench session

This session happened at around 9pm on Friday night, we had a good crew consisting of Dirk, Garett, My wife, and I. I was happy with the way everything went here.

Warm up

Bird dogs, McGills, Cat/Camel, BW squat, Scarecrows, 3 way shoulder raises, Light stretching

Squat

Warmed up with plate jumps to 420×5, then 450×5, and 470×5 (video)

Bench

Warmed up to 225×10, then 245×10 and 265×10

Dips

BW x20, +2 chains for 2 sets of 8

Chins

BW x10x4 sets, and 1 set of 6 reps (short rests wore me out)

Machine shrugs

100 total reps

Neck work w head harness

3 sets of 20 reps

  • Like I said above, happy with this one. Everything moved well and I got some good quality work done.

12/20/2016, Tuesday night DL training

As you can see from the video above, I was struggling a little bit with this one, but I’m still happy with the way it went considering everything I’ve had going on. We put in some extra hours at work the last couple weeks and one of our mini’s has been taking some extra time. Here’s what this session looked like…

Warm up

Bird dogs, McGills, Cat/Camel, BW squat, Light stretching

Sumo DL

Warmed up to 405×5, then 495×5, 545×5, and 565×5

Dimels against light band

225x15x2 sets

Close chins

5 sets of 10 reps

DB shrugs

3 sets of 20-25 reps

Hammer curls

3 sets of 10-12 reps

Neck on machine

3 sets of 20 reps

  • That was that. Good session overall, just need to dial in form and get a little tighter on the pulls. Luckily this was light enough that I could handle it from the bad positions I got myself into, but this will not fly when I start getting up in the 85%+ range in the coming weeks.

He is coming back to competitive PL after a year and a half layoff that was a result of several serious injuries including a severe rupture of the right pec that could not be repaired. Zane has an extremely busy schedule that would make most people quit before Friday. He works 55+ hours a week as a finance manager. As a renaissance man, he is also currently restoring a 140 year-old farmhouse and maintaining a hobby farm.
