Dan Dalenberg | 2017 Competition Plans

I recently competed at the Arnold XPC meet where I went 8/9- 940, 700, 730, 2370. I will be doing just about nothing in the gym for a couple more weeks before transitioning into a long off season.

Now that the Arnold has came and went, and I’ve had a minute to digest it, I’ve started thinking about what the rest of the year looks like for me.

Raw Vs. Gear

I will be lifting multi-ply for the foreseeable time being. It’s more fun for me. It’s way harder to do, the weights are way heavier and its a bigger challenge. I prefer it. I originally intended to bounce back and forth, but I’m just not interested in lifting raw for awhile, if ever again.

Next Meet

I think I am going to do a deadlift only meet this summer. The last two meets I have done, my training indicated a 750+ pull. At the Arnold I pulled 760 right up to the top before losing my grip. Its bugging me. I want to get that out of the way and just get it done. So I’m looking at something semi-local in the July/August time frame. I think there are meets that would work in either Chicago or Detroit during that time so shouldn’t be an issue.

As for the next full meet, I’m not sure. I like competing in full meets twice a year. It will likely be a September or October full meet. Maybe the same one I did last year in Columbus. I’d also consider traveling a little and making a vacation out of it. Not committed to anything right now outside of doing one in the fall. That meet will be multi-ply with the minimum goal of re-qualifying for the 2018 XPC.

For now

I’m at least 15 weeks away from any DL only meet. I won’t be doing much in the gym for a bit. My body actually feels great, but I want to take it slow and give myself time to recover. I’ll transition into an actual off season starting in April and will sprinkle in a minimalist DL contest prep towards the end.
