I just finished a 10-week ‘peak’ training cycle where I accomplished my goals of getting back to competition strength and shape and will be entering into a long offseason for the upcoming WPO in Nov of this year. Like many other TeamPRS athletes, our very own Tucker Loken is handling my diet.

Still staying with the belt squat for squat and dl. I have to stay that I’m enjoying this work, and thanks again to Dave Hoff for his insistance of me getting a belt squat, and to Danny Bellmore for hooking us up with his.
I took the RPE higher this week as I have a deload next week. This one pushed me.
- Warm-up: General 10/20/Life warm-up, as usual, each day includes but not limited to: Breaking a sweat, McGill big 3 and always band pull-aparts and shoulder band/DB work.
- Training:
- Belt Pause squat with strong band: up to 8 plates for 1 top set of 5 RPE 9
- Belt squat with strong band DL hybrid: 6 plates for 1 top set of 5 RPE 8
- More band pull-aparts (did them in warm-up too)
- Side laterals: 4×10
- 2-arm DB row: 4×10
- Hammer curl: 4×10
As you can see Blue was all over me on this day and this is something I have needed for a while to get me going. I have a tendency to coast, especially in the offseason. These days are done. We go back to the early 2000’s so he knows how to get under my skin and get my head focused.
I wanted to finish with some carries, but the backyard was underwater, so Clint warned me not even to try.
I’m writing this today (Monday), and I am very, very sore right now. I just cannot get this volume or quality of work *safely* with a barbell, so the belt squat is HUGE for me. I feel I can stay in a very tight groove and risk is minimal, while I can still go heavy. Initially, I was out of the groove, and it would smoke my knees. I have this figured out now.
In 2 weeks I hope to get back to some barbell work as my shoulder has stabilized and my upper back has settled down. However, my assistance work will be the belt squat variations. It’s taken some time to really get used to the groove and how to properly utilize it, but it’s going to stay for a bit.
