Derek Wilcox: Strong(ish) Garagebell Chronicles 8-7-16 Supposed to be heavy stuff.

[wa-wps]
I’m currently training to qualify and compete at the XPC Finals at the Arnold. I am transitioning my training right now away from weightlifting into powerlifting and hope to change the all time record books once again.

This is supposed to be a building week to next week’s supra maximal week where I basically kill myself with heavyweights with time to recover before the meet. Unfortunately this week was short on sleep and extremely high in tendinitis. My hip, elbows, shoulders and knee were all feeling beat up here so I ended up cutting my heavy work down by at least one or two sets. I have taken the rest of the week off in hopes to recover for the heavier lifting coming soon.  Hopefully it will go better next week.

Heavy Lower Day (Warm ups – Empty bar squats, rotational hip stretches, TFL stretch, bird dogs and shoulder mobility)
PL Squat in full gear up to 940×1
– Hip and knee were bothering me here and it showed.  Nothing felt overly good at all but nice to feel comfy with the openerish weight I had planned.

Just light body weight work and stretching afterward.  Inversion table, Ice, spine rehab etc.

Heavy Upper Day (Warm-ups-shoulder mobility, chin-ups)
Shirted Bench Press Inzer Phenom up to 525×1 off a 1 board
– again just openerish weights and had to shut it down.  455 as you can see in the video froze me up from tendinitis pain so bad I had to racket and retake it. Just going to have to try and take care myself better before the next sessions.

If this was me a few years ago I would be losing my mind and my confidence would be down the drain. Fortunately I know how powerful a good taper into competition can be and that also helps all those chronic issues go away before the meet. I’ll do my best next week to go into this meet strong.
