Arnold 2017 Meet Write Up: The Good, the Not So Good and The Amazing

For me this Arnold was a little bit of redemption.  I had bombed out at last year’s Arnold and was determine to make peace with that.

I approached this meet different than all my other meets; I knew coming in it would be, like all Arnold’s, a tough meet.  I was fully preparing myself to take what the day gave me good or bad.  This was my third multi-ply meet and the biggest multi-ply meet I had done yet.

We got to Columbus Tuesday night under Brian’s suggestion which was a wise choice.  It gave us time to get in get settled and get ready for the worse part of the weight cut.

Luckily Tucker Loken and I had a game plan for the weight cut and using Brian’s weight cutting techniques which you can get a copy of here, the weight cut was smooth and the weight came off pretty easy and I didn’t suffer too bad.   I was able to eat and drink some Thursday and ended up going to bed sitting at 114.6 which was perfect.  I ended up weighing in at 113.

After weigh in’s I started the refeed.  I knew I had to be super aggressive on the refeed as I had gear to fill back out.  If I wasn’t eating I was drinking.  Tons of salt, lots of carbs.  I don’t think and hour went by that I wasn’t eating. I got back up to 125 by Friday night.

A couple of us order some salty PF Changs Friday night and ate in the hotel lobby, hung out for a little bit and then went to bed early knowing we all had a long day on Saturday.

Meet Day:

It was a little chaotic in the morning.  We were supposed to start at 8:00 am.  I and my handlers, Todd, Channing, Paul and Keith all got there by 7:00 am and took over the warm up room.  It was hard to gauge when to take my last warm ups since the officials couldn’t tell us if we were starting at 8, 8:30 or 9am.  Some of the spotters and loaders didn’t get the message that we were starting at 8am as opposed to 9am.  Thankfully my handlers had a plan and the guys at Team Samson have taught me not to get flustered and stressed in these moments.  The only concern I had was that my briefs were fitting a little too lose, like really loose.  I still hadn’t filled out and bloated enough. Not too big of an issue since the Inzer LUP is adjustable.  We just tighten my suit a little tighter on the hips and legs.

Squat:

I had Channing wrapping me with Inzer Black Beauty knee wraps and he did an amazing job.

Opener: 425.  Red lighted for an “up down”.

Todd wanted to take me up but I played it safe and took my opener again

Second: 425 good.

Third: 465 Two reds for an “up down” and my right side was high.

I had a really hard time getting my set up and unrack and had to fight the groove the whole way down on all three.  I was disappointed but I was in the meet.

Bench

I was really excited to bench since I had The Bench Master Paul Key right in my ear coaching me through the lifts.

Opener: 250.  Smoked it. This was by far the best equipped bench I have ever done. I grooved it just right, technique was on point. It flew off the chest and I locked it out with no problem.

Second:  275.  I grooved it right coming down and it flew off the chest.  I got a little wobbly on the lock out and they called me for an up down.

Third: 280. Again I grooved it just right and it felt better than the 275.  I locked it out but wobbled at the top trying to stabilize.  Called for an up down again.

At this point in the meet multiply lifters were dropping like flies.  This was a tough meet.

Deadlift

It had been a long day already and I wasn’t sure what was in the tank.  Warm ups felt great.  I had bloated a little more as I kept stuffing my face with food and fluids and my Inzer Fusion suit was fitting right.

Opener: 365 felt fast and easy.

Second: 405. I’ve pulled this raw and multiply multiple times in the gym so I figured I wouldn’t have too much of a fight.  I got it mid shin and entire body started shaking and just crapped out on me.

Third: 405. Got it mid shin and body just said no.  I was done with nothing left in the tank.

Positives I took away from this meet:

1.      I stayed calm and kept my head when things weren’t going right.  I think this is partly because mentally I came into this meet prepared for a battle and knowing it was going to be a tough day. I am maturing as a lifter mentally.

2.      My team has my back no matter what. I can’t thank Keith, Channing and Paul for showing up early to make sure I had help.  The amount of support PRS gives to each other is unreal.  Daniel Dalenberg who caught a mythical unicorn and going 8 for 9 stayed and helped Paul Oneid and handled Dan Soppelsa the day before.  To watch the sea of white t-shirts in the warm up room helping each other and not to mention other lifters warms my cold soulless heart.

3.      Not every meet is going to go my way.  You just gotta roll with the punches and adapt.

Thank you to Team PRS for all your support, those that couldn’t be there checked in with us, Tucker Loken did a phenomenal job with my diet and helping me with the weight cut.  Ria, Tuesday, Liz, Jessica thank you for videoing and making sure we had what we needed throughout the day.  Danny thank you for making the trip to come help. Allison, thank you for all your support and encouragement.  Jonathan Byrd thank you for all your words of encouragement and wisdom during this meet prep, Channing, Paul, Keith, Adam and all the guys at Team Samson thank you for letting me work with your guys, I truly appreciate it.  Brian, thank you for mentoring, coaching and more importantly believing in me and seeing the potential in me.

The real MVP is Todd though.  He goes through everything with me, the weight cut, the training, supporting me and sacrificing so much so I can do this.  This was our 15th meet together and he always know exactly what I need whether its kick in the ass or just a hug and encouraging words. He’s always been there, countless hours coaching me, all the talks about programming and training and helping me stay on track.  He truly is the great amazing Schmoo.

What’s up next:

I had originally planned on do the Women’s Pro Am raw in April but after talking with Todd and Brian I need a break. I’ve done four multi-ply meets back to back and my body is giving me all the signs it’s time to cut back on the intensity and have a good offseason.  I didn’t want to push my luck and end up with a complete shit show of a meet.  I’m ready to reach some big raw goals I’ve had for a while and want to come in fresh and ready to attack them.  I am so unbalanced with my life during meet prep time and it’s to re-balance things.  I’ll be doing a little powerbuilding and building my raw strength back up and plan on looking for a raw meet sometime in the fall or winter.
