Lisa Guggisberg-Offseason Week 5

I recently competed at the RPS US Open where I totaled 903lbs raw in wraps at 114lbs. I am currently in offseason with plans to compete in a multiply meet in the fall.

I was down at the RPS Redemption III meet this past weekend helping out teammates Brian Carroll and Jason Kowalewski, my husband Todd Guggisberg and Team Samson Filipe Gusmao.  The boys battled through and had some nice PR’s.  I am very proud how we all worked as a team and came together.  Thank you to Adam Driggers, Shane Ford, Jonathan Byrd, Conrad Dove for all your help and Danny Vega for stopping in with the family and showing your support.

I was able to get a squat session in after they got the warm up room set up on Friday night.

Warm up:

  • McGill Big Three
  • Goblet squats
  • Bar 2 x 10

Squat Work:

  • 145 x 5
  • 195 x 3
  • 245 x 1
  • 295 x 1 briefs on (First time using Inzer Predator briefs)
  • 315 x 1 briefs on
  • 335 x 1 LUP on straps down
  • 355 x 1 LUP straps up

I was going to go 380#  with straps up but Brian said not to waste the energy and go right to 400#

  • 400 x 1 LUP straps up with knee wraps

I came near depth on this one and for the first since putting the gear on that I opened up, sat back more and felt good about the squat.  I think I just needed to get some real weight on my back to help me sit back into the briefs and suit more.  Ended the night on a good note.

Monday Deadlift and Accessory Work:

Warm up:

  • McGill big 3
  • Goblet squats

Put briefs on and did some light box squats.  Wanted to work on really sitting back into the briefs and learning to really push my knees out and open up.

  • 135# 4×6 to below parallel box.

Deadlift Work:

  • 135 x 5 (LUP on straps down)
  • 225 x 3
  • 315 x 2
  • 335 x 1
  • 355 x 1

Here’s the cool thing about deadlifting in suit that I learned from Adam Driggers, you don’t have to go heavy to learn how to pull yourself into and under that bar.  You can do that with light weight because the weight on the bar doesn’t matter, it’s you learning how to push down and get into that start position.

I will deload this week, a few more weeks of offseason and then start meet prep under Brian Carroll’s coaching and experienced eye.

A self-proclaimed former high school band nerd turned meathead nerd, Lisa has been coached and mentored by Brian Carroll using 10/20/Life principals for 3 years. She started CrossFiting in 2006 but gave that up after realizing all she wanted to do was squat, bench and deadlift heavy. She now competes as a raw and multi-ply powerlifter in the 114 and 123 weight classes. Lisa has All-Time top 10 totals in both raw and multi-ply in her respective weight classes with a raw pro total of 936 lbs at 114 and a pro 1118 lb multi-ply pro total at 123 and 1090 lb multi-ply total at 114. She is currently ranked the #1 female multi-ply lifter at 123, #2 at 114 multi-ply female and #3 raw with wraps. Lisa has a B.A. in Political Science and a Masters in Public Administration, but hates politics and political debates. She is a mom of two, a firefighter wife and has worked as a full time litigation paralegal for almost 20 years.
