Lisa Guggisberg: RPS South FL Conquest

I recently competed in my first multiply meet at the RPS South FL Conquest where I totaled 1118 in the 123wt class (I weighed in at 118).  You can read about my decision why I decided to go multiply HERE.

As always Mindy and Bert ran a great meet, very efficient, got through 50 plus lifters before 6:30 pm, great venue, lifter friendly, spotters were on their game all day and overall lots of fun. Got to hang out with Brian, Ria, Liz, Jason, Channing and Nick.  Jonathan Byrd, Clint Smith and Traci Ivey also competed.  This was Traci’s first meet. Her lifts were 308, 209 and 369 for an 887 total going 7-9. Only lifts missed were a 220 bench and a 330 squat. This was with only 10 weeks of powerlifting under her belt using 10/20/life programming. Wasn’t the day Clint had hoped for but bigger totals for him are on the horizon. Jonathan Byrd was so close to having huge day – it was still hit his second best total to date – 2455 at a lighter bw.

Weight cut:

Easy as there really wasn’t a weight cut.  I had originally played with the idea of cutting to 114 but after discussing things with Brian and Byrd I decided to stay at 123.  It took one unnecessary factor out.  Fear was that if I cut to 114 and couldn’t fill back out to fit my gear, with my first multiply meet we decided to just remove that issue and not cut.  I train around 123-125 so I just simply increased water intake and cut 15g of carbs out of my diet and dropped a lot.  Probably because as soon I a decided to not cut all the stress of worrying about making weight vanished.  I ended up weighing in at 118.

We drove down Thursday am and I was a little nervous we would run right into the hurricane coming across the state but luckily it came ashore more north and we missed it.  Went down Thursday night to the hotel restaurant and had some dinner with Brian, Ria, Tracy, Nick and Liz and then headed up to bed.  I never sleep the night before a weigh-ins so I was thankful they were at the hotel the next morning and I didn’t have to get up super early to drive to weigh-ins.

Topped the scale out at 118lbs and started shoving food in my mouth to get back up to 125-127 or more so that my gear fit, especially my bench shirt.

Went to bed feeling the most calm I have ever felt before a meet.

Meet day:

Woke up excited and for the first time ever I wasn’t nervous .  I was anxious to get on the platform but surprisingly calm.

Ate my usual breakfast. Meet Traci downstairs and staked out our campsite for the day in the warm up room.

I started warming up with Traci and doing usual birddogs, McGill crunches because I am so use to going in the first flight of lifters.  Surprise on me.  They posted flights and I was the first to go in the second flight.  Big girl status for me.

Sat back down and relaxed until it was time to warm up.

Warm-ups:

Everything felt stupid light on squat warm ups.  Bar was moving well.  Gear was cooperating.  I was amped up but not nervous.

Would love to tell ya what my warm up weights were but I just let Todd handle that, I didn’t want to think about weights, just wanted to worry about moving the bar.

Squats

Opener 402:

I had Jason and Brian calling my depth and all I was concerned about was getting tight and coming off the mono with a good strong unrack, sitting back, opening up, being patient with up command and turning it around quick.

Felt super light, fast turn around.

Second Attempt 435:

Moved better than 405.  Jitters worked out.  Turned it around super fast and looked better than opener.

Third Attempt 463:

Had Todd tighten my suit slightly.

Came out the rack a little too far forward and fought it the whole way down.  Slow and not very smooth on decent and I couldn’t load the suit as much as I would’ve liked to but I was able to stay with it.

Bench

This is probably the only thing I am salty over from the entire meet. I had a great bench training cycle but lesson in gear, it’s not as easy as you think it is.

Opener 236:

Able to touch very easy, nice pop off the chest, flew up fast.  A little too fast, I couldn’t catch up with lock out and double pumped it at the top.  Brian was in my ear calling commands and I remember hearing  “YES!” Then Awwww…

Second Attempt 236:

Brian gave me a little more chest since it was so easy to touch.  Easy to touch again but I didn’t flair and threw it back into the rack.  Never not flaired before so not exactly sure what I did or what I was thinking.

Third Attempt 253:

I had to get this.  I was not going to let another Arnold experience happen to me.  Got a much needed come to Jesus reality check from Byrd.  Brian and Todd helped me get my head right for this.  Came down and touched easy again.  Almost double pumped it but I was able to control it at the top. Good lift.  I was still in.

We kept the opener low not knowing where to start since it was my first meet.  In training I am usually all over the place between 230-250.  265 and heavier and it’s smooth as butta.  But also taking in the fact that I just squatted heavy we went light with opener, it was the wise, mature decision.  This was all uncharted territory for me throwing caution to the wind wouldn’t have been smart.

Deadlifts

Deadlifts were the wildcard in this meet.  I never was able to get the deadlift suit or LUP to work for me. I was having problems with lock out, I was slow off the floor.  We even tried pulling in briefs only but I still just couldn’t get it.  We made the decision a week before that I would pull raw.  I hadn’t done a whole lot of volume as it was mostly just trying to figure out form in the suits.  To be honest I was a little worried about deadlifts.

At this point I checked what my subtotal was.  I wanted 1100 for this meet and knew I had to pull at least 385 to make that happen.  This was 1lb lighter than my best pull.

Started warming up and again everything felt like an empty bar.  Bar was moving super fast and I had hope that I could have a good pull.

Opener 350:

Fast and easy

At this point I attempted to help Byrd with his suit and was told to sit my ass down and worry about securing a big total.  Stared a hole into his soul but I took his advice, sat down and rested.

Second Attempt 385:

Fast and easy.  Faster than I had pulled it at the RPS US Open in San Diego in April.

I turned around and told Todd to pull the trigger and put in 402.

Third Attempt 402:

It had a little fight in it but I was surprised at how well and fast it moved.  As soon as I got to the top I knew I had it.  Waited for the lights and then celebrated.

@mrsgoogs with a 402 lb deadlift at 118 lbs bw!

Wasn’t expecting a good day for deadlifts, let alone a huge PR so this was icing on the cake and my favorite moment of the entire meet.

Thank you Channing, Jason and Nick for all your help. Jason, keep those weak, lose wraps coming.  It was pleasure competing with you Traci and proud to share the platform with you, thank you for all your support. I am expecting some huge totals from you soon.  Liz, I love hanging with you.  Thank you for all your help and taking videos for me.  Ria, one of the most patient and selfless people I know, you’re forever and always my woman crush.

Thank you Captain Jacked for the Magnum and Nubreed products keeping me healthy and my diet on point during meet prep.  Check them out HERE.

Adam Driggers and Team Samson thank you for allowing me to train with you guys and for all your help and coaching during training.

Paul Key-thank you for taking your time out of your busy schedule to come and help and imparting all your knowledge and programming for me.  Don’t worry we’re gonna get that 300 plus bench soon.

Byrd -thank you for playing the big brother and talking sense into me.  Apparently you’re one of the few not afraid to yell at me have your soul consumed into the fiery depths of hell.  Keep it coming, I need it sometimes.

Brian-thank you for giving me this opportunity to compete in multiply by supplying me with the best equipment out there, Inzer and for all your coaching, words of wisdom, guidance, and faith in me.  If not for you, I would never be able to take this challenge on.  Come a long way but we’re just getting started.

Todd-Your handler fee went up for this one.  I owe you.  Thank you for your dedication, support and patience with me.  I know you put just as much effort and time into my meet preps as I do. You’re there every step and I know I don’t always verbalize it but I am very thankful for all you do.

First multiply meet and I am hooked.  I am not saying I will become exclusively a multiply lifter.  Plan is to bounce back and forth between the two.  There are still some big goals I want to hit raw.  I am not sure how all the gear lifting will play into my raw lifting but I am certainly excited to see.
