09 Jun Meet report for LCS lifters
Two of Lowcountry Strength’s powerlifters competed last weekend. And I’m incredibly proud of both of them.
Matt Dub made his return to raw lifting after almost 3 years and opened with meet PRs. Competing as a 220 he squared 540, benched 375 (with a near miss at 400) and a 500lb deadlift. Going 7 for 9 he had a helluva day. We still unsure whether raw is for him or not though. Haha! He’s an exceptional geared bencher with a best of 606lbs at 198lbs bodyweight. I’ll be interested in seeing just how much this raw work will have brought up his gear strength if we go back that way. Our current plan is to bring his body fat down a bit and get his muscular endurance back up. From there he’ll have a great base to move on to either direction he wants to go. Matt is one of those guys that will succeed no matter what he chooses to do and more than likely if he goes back and forth it’ll only help the other. Dub has been a huge help for me in my meet prep and LCS is fortunate to have him.
Powerlifting is a hobby and needs to be fun. I make suggestions for my lifters but I never tell them what they have to do. It needs to be their decision. Well, how they compete. I tell them what to do training wise. And they listen.
…most of the time. Haha!
Steve Clark didn’t have the day he wanted it we learned a lot in the process. Competing as a 220, he squatted 455, benched 320, and deadlifted 485. Narrowly missing a squat PR on his third attempt, we’re much more aware of his weak points and how we’ll address those in his upcoming off season. His bench has been making leaps and bounds from when he first started training with us and it showed. As we continue to refine his setup and transition into a few select exercises for him, this’ll only keep going up. His deadlift is deceiving. I suspect his really going to hate me for some of the things I’m going to be making him do to fix it. His real issue is set up and tension at the bottom. His lockout is great. He’ll put in the work. He’s been a huge asset to LCS since coming on board and I’ll do everything I can to make sure his next meet is outstanding.
