Can anyone critique this form? This was the first time we took the board out of the equation. We have been breaking this shirt in for the last 6 weeks. He’s done 525 to a 3 board but as we remove board, the weight gets lighter and lighter. His raw bench is around 365, so I know something is wrong. Thank you!!
First, address the set-up. It’s really non-existent. Second, bend the bar and reach lower.
Cues need to be reinforced to the lifter during the lift: lower meaning toward the feet, higher meaning toward the face. Stay up – meaning keep your hips up and don’t succumb to the load and flatten out.
Next what program is he doing? 6 weeks straight in the shirt? that’s bad news for just about anyone. Check out 10/20/Life if you have not: https://shop.powerrackstrength.com/products/10-20-life-second-edition
Implement Will and I’s suggestions, and send over some video in a few weeks.
It looks like he’s trying to ride it down with his raw groove. He needs to work on bringing the bar lower towards his belly. Staying flared like that doesn’t load the shirt or collar nearly as well. Raw benching and shirted benching are going to have 2 totally different bar paths.
Turn the heels out more to use the feet to drive back more into the traps. This should help create a slightly better angle that’ll be easier to bring the bar more towards the belly. There’s a bubble that he has to ride on the way down and it looks like he’s sliding too high off the bubble towards his chin. Too much elbow flare too soon.
