Lisa Guggisberg: Week 1 Offseason

“This sickness, if you will, is part of what drives people to be successful, it’s drive, it’s the intense desire to win.  It’s part of being unbalanced. I admit that I am sometimes and sometimes more than others.  I really make an effort to be able to turn this off and turn it on only when it’s time.  Because it can really mess your head up.”—Brian Carroll

Brian recently wrote this in his Arnold meet write up and it really hit home for me.  It also reaffirmed my decision to not do the Women’s Pro Am in April.  The Arnold was my third multiply meet in a row and it had really taken a toll on me physically and mentally.  I need a break.  I am so completely unbalanced during meet prep and it finally caught up to me.  It’s time to take a step back and repair during the offseason.  It was time to turn it off.

I didn’t want to push myself into another meet and pray for a good day, pray that the wind blew in the right direction, pray to the powerlifting gods that all the stars align and I have a perfect meet.  I wasn’t ready mentally or physically for another meet so I made the right decision and pulled the plug.

I got with Tucker Loken and we came up with a plan to do some powerbuilding and focus on some weak points.  So far I am really enjoying just lifting to lift, high reps, more body building type movements, I am enjoying not being strictly regimented to a training schedule.  Most women spend their Saturdays shopping or doing whatever normal females do but I have spent the last 30 plus Saturdays training.  I’m not complaining by any means, it’s MY CHOICE to do this.

Here’s how this week has gone so far:

Sunday Glute/hamstring work

  • Laying leg curl 4 x 12 last two sets drop set with forced reps
  • DB stiff leg deadlifts 4×12
  • Walking lunges 4×20 each leg
  • Seat hamstring curls 4×12-15
  • Belt squat/shark pit 4×20
  • McGill Big 3

Tuesday Back work

  • Single arm lat pulldowns 4 x 8-12
  • Single arm DB rows 4 x 8-12
  • Cable lat pull over subset with DB lat pullover 4 x 10-15
  • Hammer Strength machine rows 4x 10-15
  • McGill Big 3

I’ll put a bar on my back and pull this Saturday for some high rep work.
