For the over 40 lifter who still wants to excel, what is the most important variable to manipulate?
Craig,
Thanks for the question. I’m nearly 40, but more of a lifting age of 55. So, here’s one question back to you: how long have you been lifting? Forty could be young in some ways; i.e., wear and tear on the body. If you have lived a pretty passive life, then your limits may be few. If you’ve been lifting since 13, your lifting age is much different.
Make sense?
This is an impossible question to answer, so I’ll ask some questions back;
What is the goal?
What does excel mean? Be able to walk pain-free once again; lift pain-free again?
Squat 135? 315?
Sorry, I can’t be more helpful, but one piece of advice I can offer is become cerebral and have a purpose for everything you do. If you can’t answer the why then you shouldn’t be doing it.
One suggestion I can provide is read 10/20/Life and Gift of Injury for more perspective on essential variables.
