Zane Geeting, Friday night, meet prep squat with Video

I’m currently training to make my comeback to the platform for the XPC finals at the Arnold Classic this March. Its been close to 2 years since I’ve posted a total, and I’m looking forward to changing that.

I didn’t squat last week because my left hip was bugging me. I know I’m not going to total big at this meet, the goal is just to make it through and hit something in the 2100-2200 range at 220. If I can do that for my first one back, I’ll be very happy. I know I’m off by 100 lbs. or more on both my squat, and my bench, what happens with the deadlift will be interesting to see as my left biceps is partially torn in the muscle/tendon junction. This is usually my underhand, so I’ll be hook gripping at the meet, with no time to train it between now and then, lol.

We squatted around 9pm Friday night and it was cold as hell, wind chills were well below zero all day long. It took a while to get things warmed up and going, but here’s how they went once I was able to.

Warm up

Bird dogs

McGills

Fat man rows and push ups

BW squat

Squat

worked up to 350×1 raw

Briefs

worked up to 530×1

Suit bottom

620×1

Full gear

710×1 (video says 730, but I’m pretty sure it was 710. This will be around a last warm up)

800×1 (this will be a little heavier than an opener)

820×1 (this will be in the range of a second attempt)

I’m pretty happy with the way these went considering the fact that it was frigid cold and I was 15-16 hours into my day when I started putting weight on the bar. I’m still not happy with my gear situation (5+ year old suit and briefs) but its the best I’ve got at the moment and I’m making it work. I figure I’ll be good for this or more come meet day, with better conditions all the way around.

Deadlift

I worked up to 515×1 in briefs with straps. This was to test the biceps that I tore 6 days earlier. This was my gauge to see if it was still realistic to do the meet. This is the first time I’ve pulled since the little tune-up meet I did in January. I still felt strong enough for what the weights were, and the biceps didn’t seem to be aggravated from the pulling. I may go a little heavier next week, or I may just roll into the meet and see what happens.

Reverse hyper

325x15x3 sets

Bad girl

130×10-15×3 sets

That was the end of it. I did what I needed to and feel my squat is dialed in for the meet. Even though my gear is not giving me the rebound I’m looking for (mostly the briefs) I’m still happy with where Im at considering all the circumstances.

Zane Geeting is a pro multi-ply powerlifter with best lifts of a 935 squat, 625 bench, and 765 deadlift. He is coming back to competitive PL after a year and a half layoff that was a result of several serious injuries including a severe rupture of the right pec that could not be repaired. Zane has an extremely busy schedule that would make most people quit before Friday. He works 55+ hours a week as a finance manager. As a renaissance man, he is also currently restoring a 140 year-old farmhouse and maintaining a hobby farm. Despite all this, Zane still finds time to train 2-3 times per week, as well as coach other lifters.
