Got into an argument (with an undocumented powerlifter). Argued back and forth he states according to studies wraps are bad for your knees, I say nonsense as they support the joint. Thoughts? Thanks as always guys!
He isn’t wrong and neither are you.  There are not many “studies” that have been done on the effect of knee wraps on the durability of the knee joint.  That being said, compression of the joint affects its tracking and soft tissue mechanics.  This COULD lead to increased wear and tear on the joint and placing stress on areas that are not necessarily meant to support it. The wrap does support the knee and add stability, but repetitive use could possibly have negative effects.  The most notable being chondromalicia patellae.  This is a softening of the cartilage underneath the kneecap.  This is the main reason that most lifters will use knee wraps intermittently during the offseason and exclusively during prep.  By using the key wraps only when required, you can stave off any negative effect that the knee wrap may/may not have on your joint.
Thats a sticky question. There isn’t any research I know of that was strictly done with limited variables to say whether they hurt or help knee wear.
I don’t see how they could hurt more than help when needed esp to those with bad knee pain.
A tight wrap can’t be too good but neither can naked knee. Who knows really.
