How should you incorporate wraps into raw training? My max I base my numbers on is a wrapped max. So assuming that, my 5×5 sets (for example) would be sets of 5 with wraps but those sets seems like a rather lightweight to use wraps. Should I base my numbers off my raw max and know that I will squat more in competition? It seems like it would beneficial to wear wraps to get used to the feel and the groove.
Thanks,
Ian
Id use wraps with anything over 70% of your max but this has a lot of variables. How good are you in wraps? what phase of training are you in? lots to consider here.
A couple things to think about –
Off season is based on RPE, so knowing a max is irrelevant. In the off-season, wraps should not be used. Stronger you are without them, transfers over to how strong you are with them. Meet prep – use wraps and use competition max. No wraps for accessories. Reps above 3, even 5 are tough to do in wraps because of the tissue damage associated. Your knees and calves will take a beating, and this is absolutely not necessary to get stronger. Why lift heavier when you can get the same gains with less weight?
If you grab a copy of 10/20Life, you’ll learn how this all works synergistically. Reserve the wraps for % work during meet prep and peaking.
