21 Jun Quick Rant: Medical Industrial Complex
New Series Coming on this Soon!
In an upcoming series, I will discuss the “medical-industrial complex,” the concept that the medical field prioritizes making money over patient well-being. I worked as a massage therapist for a decade and saw the horror. This includes Physical Therapists, Radiologists, Medical doctors, chiropractors, pain management specialists, surgeons, and more. My goal is to help people understand why PRP injections, stem cell injections, and spinal injections are often not beneficial and why, when they are helpful, they are frequently not administered correctly.
When you consult a doctor for back pain, the recommended treatment is 9.9/10x; in my experience, a generic, one-size-fits-all approach to visit a chiropractor, stretch, take medication, do non-specific stretching exercises, try Pilates, etc. However, there is an inherent problem with this method. I can guarantee your Primary care doctor gave you this advice without asking in-depth questions about your pain. They likely did not explore your pain triggers or what alleviates your back pain. At best, they don’t spend more than a few minutes with you. You wouldn’t prescribe insulin to someone without first confirming they are diabetic, so why recommend an exercise or injection for back pain without fully understanding the underlying issues?
Doctors who refer patients to the next specialist without proper communication need to provide more direction. The various professionals involved in your care often need to collaborate more effectively. They assume all back pain is the same and should be treated uniformly. This is simply not true. Each person’s genetic predisposition, goals, cascade of damage, pain triggers, and movement patterns are unique and require a well-coordinated plan based on a thorough assessment.
I Have Been Through This Myself…
I have experienced this endless cycle of seeing specialists, receiving spinal shots, and undergoing PRP or stem cell injections. I know what it’s like. It got me nowhere with my back pain and only made things worse because the root cause of my pain was never addressed. These treatments were essentially band-aids, temporarily masking the problem without solving it. The result is a never-ending cycle that benefits the medical industry financially while causing more harm than good for both your back pain and your wallet. In my opinion, this creates lifelong patients who will permanently need medical care, and I do not think this is accidental. I wish I could say this was my experience, but it’s not. I hear this same story every day of my life from people worldwide.
