Team Samson Powerlifting- Post APF Equipped Nats, and a thing about bars.

Two weeks ago we had several Team Samson lifters, plus another PRS team member in Danny Bellmore compete here in Jacksonville, Florida at the APF Equipped Nationals. Aside From Clint Smith Bombing on the squat, everyone had decent days, with minimal issues. Between Byrd and I, I think we wrapped every knee possible in the building. It was a good time, and a well run meet with Wayne Pullem at the helm.

During the meet I had a conversation with a local raw lifter about bars. He has come to our gym before and trained with our equipment, but questioned the need for multiple bars aside from specialty ones. His comment was “Strong is strong, If you can do it with one bar, you can do it with all bars.” True… Kinda…

In the years that Team Samson has been around, Adam Driggers, Brian Carroll, Clint Smith, and now Jon Byrd as well, have made this place to train heads and shoulders above anywhere else locally. Sometimes paying attention to the finer details is what makes a good lifter great. Iwould include bar selection as one of those finer details. In the Train For Chaos article, Driggers says control the things in training that you’ll have control over at the meet, anything else is a waste of your energy. Training with the same equipment the meet you are doing is one of those things.

Iron Wolfe, Mastodon, Bulldog, Texas Squat bars. Yup. We’ve got them. The realization that the bars have different qualities under load, seem lost on some people. The Mastodon is a thicker bar than most of all of them, and with it being so thick, can have a tendency to roll down your back. The Iron Wolfe has a little flex to it with heavy weight, and the knurling is super aggressive. The Texas squat bar has alot of whip under heavy loads. I’ve never used the Bulldog bar, so I cannot offer much comment.

These seemingly small things can make a difference on meet day. Knowing how to adjust, or better yet, training with these bars, so there is no need for on the fly adjustments, should be a priority for most lifters. Train for Chaos.
